WABO has appointed Professor Jianwu Dang as a member of its Scientific Advisory Board and as Joint Scientist. The collaboration will focus on the cognitive mechanisms, computational representations, and multimodal signals involved in human intent.
From speech cognition to neural intent
Professor Dang is a researcher and doctoral supervisor at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a Distinguished Professor at Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology. He previously served as chief scientist of a National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program) project and as a professor at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
His research spans speech science, speech information processing, dialogue understanding, and the neural mechanisms of speech cognition. This work provides a scientific foundation for studying how intent forms, changes with context, and is expressed through multiple signals.
Areas of collaboration
Professor Dang will advise WABO’s research strategy and collaborative work across four connected areas:
- cognitive mechanisms and computational representations of neural intent;
- multimodal modeling across EEG, EMG, speech, text, and task context;
- cross-user and cross-task generalization, uncertainty, and safe rejection;
- interfaces that translate high-level human intent into controlled machine action.
The objective is not context-free mind reading. WABO is developing task-conditioned neural intent models that interpret choices, confirmations, corrections, stops, and takeovers within explicit task boundaries. Professor Dang’s experience in speech cognition and multimodal intent research will help connect this engineering program with deeper cognitive evidence.
